Networking

Networking

For many of you, a single PC will be enough and you need not concern yourself with networking.

But, as soon as your business has more than one PC you need to give some thoughts to networking. So, what is networking? At its simplest, it means that two or more PCs are interconnected so that each can gain access to the files on the other, use each others printers and so on. Protecting files or folders on the PCs means that you can still keep private information on one PC from users of the other.

Simplistically there can be three forms of networking.

Direct Connection. Two PCs can be directly connected to each other. A very simple cheap solution but with very limited potential.

Connection via a hub. Initially as few as two PCs can be connected through this route. But this method allows easy expansion of your network - even up to the levels where you no longer qualify as a "small business" - and it can form the core for the third option. A very effective option for a busy small office with perhaps half a dozen PCs is to connect via a hub and have one relatively cheap PC to act exclusively as a print server. Initially this can cost as little as £100.

A Network Server. Also usually using a hub, but controlled from one central PC which is actually used to hold most of your data and to control the network. A much more expensive solution but with even more potential for upgrading. Thus, a must if you foresee rapid growth. Obviously, however, the initial cost is going to be at least £1000.

Networks can involve extensive cabling, or, at a higher price but useful in short term or rented premises, wireless connection.

But, whatever the networking method - it is a must as soon as you are using more than one PC on your business premises.
